Mostly through doing the work itself! We accept a new challenge, do some research, try it out, then reflect on what we have done well and what we can improve on.

There is also the social aspect of learning at work. We learn through discussing our progress with our peers and bosses, usually with some help from the organisation, as well as feedback from different people.

You haven't heard anything new so far. But the question is – how well are we learning at work? Sometimes we may be resistant to learning new things at work. Other times our work becomes so predictable we feel we have nothing new to learn.

  • The individual needs to be willing to learn

  • The work itself should be challenging

  • The people around you should be able and willing to help

  • The organisation needs to be empowering and supportive of learning
