Straits Interactive

The Journey Towards Enhanced Training and Development Excellence

Background

In the fast-evolving business landscape, companies are under increasing pressure to keep pace with technological advancements and changing market dynamics. According to a report by the World Economic Forum " Future of Jobs Report 2023", by 2025, 50% of all employees will need reskilling due to the rapid adoption of new technologies. This significant shift underscores the critical need for businesses to invest in comprehensive training and development programmes to ensure their workforce remains competitive and adaptable.

The emphasis on reskilling and upskilling is driven by the necessity of enhancing operational efficiency and fostering innovation. As traditional training methods often fail to meet contemporary demands, organisations increasingly adopt structured and technology-driven approaches to workforce development. These approaches not only help in maintaining compliance with industry standards but also in promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Straits Interactive initiated a strategic effort to improve its training methods and internal capacities in response to changing market needs and technological progress. The objective of the project was to create and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for their WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) courses, enabling the Learning & Development (L&D) team to produce a complete courseware suite, and ensure consistent quality in WSQ course delivery.

In pursuit of this, Straits Interactive initiated a workplace learning project as a member of the Learning Enterprise Alliance (LEA), representing the National Centre of Excellence for Workplace Learning (NACE@IAL)

Identifying existing performance gaps

The project team embarked on a comprehensive analysis to enhance their training and development processes. The following areas were identified as opportunities for improvement:

  1. Alignment with WSQ Course Standards:
Recognising the opportunity for refinement, the project identified areas where existing training processes could be elevated to meet the high standards set by the WSQ framework, paving the way for enhanced compliance and quality assurance.
  1. Capability Development of Course Administrators and Facilitators:
Through insightful stakeholder consultations, opportunities for skill enhancement among course administrators and facilitators came to light. By addressing these areas, Straits Interactive can empower its team to effectively utilise Capabara, their in-house trademark system that offers as a capability-as-a-service platform to clients, to foster a more streamlined and efficient training environment.
  1. Quality Standardisation in Course Implementation:
The project's thorough assessment revealed areas for improvement in ensuring consistency and effectiveness across training delivery. By standardising processes, Straits Interactive can guarantee a high-quality learning experience for all participants, ultimately enhancing their skills and knowledge.

  2. Evaluation of Training Effectiveness:
Embracing continuous improvement, the project team identified the need for robust evaluation mechanisms. Implementing these frameworks will not only gauge training impact but also provide valuable insights for refining future programmes, fostering a culture of growth and development.

  3. Market Alignment and Client Expectations:
With a proactive approach to understanding market dynamics and client preferences, Straits Interactive is poised to tailor its training solutions to meet evolving industry demands. This strategic alignment ensures that the organisation remains at the forefront of delivering relevant and impactful training experiences.

By seizing these opportunities for growth, Straits Interactive aimed to enhance its training capabilities and ensure the delivery of high-quality WSQ courses that meet industry standards and client expectations.

Integration of workplace learning interventions

To address the above, the project team co-create with IAL’s workplace learning consultant to implement the following:

1. Alignment of Training Processes with WSQ Standards:

The project team focused on aligning the existing training processes with the standards outlined by the WSQ framework. This involved revising the curriculum and workflows to ensure that training content and delivery methods directly corresponded with the requirements specified by WSQ. By mapping the training curriculum to the WSQ guidelines, employees would receive relevant and industry-recognised training, enhancing their skills and competencies.

2. Capability Development through Blended Learning:

The team acknowledged the critical importance of applying practical skills and implementing blended learning methods to enhance the capabilities of course administrators and facilitators. This approach encompasses a combination of in-person classes, virtual modules, and hands-on training to provide a comprehensive educational experience. By integrating practical experience with academic learning, staff are equipped with the necessary skills to effectively manage course materials' development and distribution.

3. Utilisation of the Company's System for Training Resources:

To streamline the multifaceted administration requirements, the project team harnessed the power of the existing company's system, Capabara. This solution facilitated the digitisation and centralisation of training materials, course schedules, and participant records, thus revolutionising resource allocation and management. Through the seamless integration of Capabara into training processes, Straits Interactive achieved unparalleled levels of operational efficiency, ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery of WSQ courses while simultaneously meeting regulatory requirements with ease.

4. Continuous Evaluation and Improvement:

The project team implemented a robust evaluation mechanism to monitor the effectiveness of the interventions and identify areas for further improvement. Regular feedback sessions, post-training surveys, and performance assessments were conducted to gauge the impact of the interventions on employee learning and performance. Based on the evaluation findings, adjustments were made to the training methodologies and content to ensure continuous enhancement and alignment with organisational goals.

Through the integration of these workplace learning interventions, Straits Interactive sought to address the identified performance gaps, elevate employee competencies, and ensure the delivery of high-quality WSQ courses that meet both industry standards and learner expectations.

Scaling up on the workplace learning imperative

At the end of the project with NACE@IAL, Straits Interactive was able to achieve the following outcomes:

The implemented training processes and SOPs were validated by Straits Interactive stakeholders, ensuring alignment with WSQ standards

Insights from Kirkpatrick's model assessments provided valuable feedback on training impact and effectiveness, guiding continuous improvement efforts

Employees demonstrated increased proficiency in courseware development and delivery, enhancing overall training quality

Straits Interactive embarked on a transformative journey to refine its training and development processes for WSQ courses. Working closely with IAL's workplace learning consultant, they identified key performance gaps and implemented targeted interventions. These interventions included aligning training processes with WSQ standards, enhancing capability development through blended learning, and optimising resource management using Capabara.

The results confirmed the effectiveness of training procedures, demonstrating significant skill development among employees and improved operational productivity. Furthermore, implementing Kirkpatrick's model allowed for a comprehensive assessment of training success, leading efforts for ongoing enhancement. This demonstrated Straits Interactive's dedication to providing high quality training and ensuring the ongoing growth of its staff to align with industry norms and learners’ needs.
